JB: Institutional Context - Insidious (Wan, 2011)

Production

  • The film was shot over just here weeks during 2010 - with little time to rehearse, allowing the actors more freedom during filming.
  • The two homes used as locations in the film were real houses located in Los Angeles, which featured without changes to their inside design due to the lack of budget of the film.

  • Budget constraints meant that proper production makeup was often substituted with other products, such as makeup on the demon’s face.
  • Many crew members (such as Joseph Bishara, the film’s composer) also starred in the film - further reducing the costs of hiring further actors.
  • The film was shot on the RED One MX - a camera significantly better than most prosumer gear available at around $4000 when available, yet significantly less expensive than the RED Epic (around $20000 for just the ‘brain’) and the Mysterium X.

    Distribution

  • Although all three Insidious films were produced by FilmDistrict, they only distributed the first two films - with the franchise being picked up by Focus Features and Gramercy Pictures (a subsidiary of Focus) for the third.
  • A successful distribution campaign resulted in within its USA opening weekend alone, the film making over 8 times its original budget of $1.5 million at over $13 million. The film went on to gross $97 at box office.
  • Insidious: Chapter 3 (Whannell, 2015) employed a greater marketing campaign to create hype amongst fans of the series and horror in general, with distributor Focus Features making use of Virtual-Reality technology to provide a ‘haunted house’ experience in select US cities, and for anyone with a inexpensive Google Cardboard headset and smartphone.
  • After its premiere at the Toronto International FIlm Festival in September 2010, within 12 hours Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions picked up the rights for distribution
  • One day prior to the film’s home media release, Sony Pictures and Fangoria hosted a free screening with Director Q&A in Los Angeles.
