EH: Still Frame Experimentation

Below is pictured my photo of my horror photo still frame:

  • I have used the stock location of the domestic sphere to create an increased sense of vulnerability towards the victim, as the majority of people often feel calm and secure in their own homes, with little defense as they are not suspecting attack. The setting also highly scares the audience, as it is a relatable place for the audience to be in, thus involving them more in the scene.
  • A commonly used stock prop in the horror genre, the knife, has its silhouette positioned prominently in the frame, which implies that violence is about to occur and the victim will be stabbed, thus creating tension and a menacing atmosphere. The knife is also the only part of the murderer that the frame reveals, thus also creating an element of mystery.
  • I used a computer screen in the set design to show the close up facial expression of the person whom they are video-calling, which reveals the imminent danger the victim is in, thus heightening the tension.
  • Minimal lighting is used to create a shadowy environment, with only the computer screen illuminating the woman's face, thus limiting the vision of the viewers and causing only the silhouette of the knife to be seen.
